Did you know that about half of the Rootbound Farm’s weekly harvest goes to provide veggie shares to families on a sliding payment scale? Thanks to our amazing non-profit partner, New Roots, there are 9 Fresh Stop markets operating in the Louisville and Southern Indiana areas serving 350 families every week. The Fresh Stop Markets are created, led, and sustained by community leaders and are housed in community centers, churches, and businesses. They operate similarly to the CSA model; the neighborhood residents sign up in advance and the farmers provide a box of the freshest collection of in-season produce. Volunteers help to safely pack shares and distribute them.
Fresh Stop Market members pay for their CSA shares on a sliding scale so no one is turned away; about 75% of Fresh Stop market participants are limited resource according to federal eligibility guidelines. New Roots provides critical infrastructure that allows folks to pay with SNAP Benefits and WIC benefits and by buying in bulk they are able to access wholesale prices. This creative approach helps to counter the inequalities that too often keep folks from enjoying good healthy food.
At Rootbound Farm, we believe that the pleasures of good food are pleasures that we all share. Whether it’s biting into a juicy watermelon in the hot Kentucky summer or smelling the tomato sauce simmer on the stove, healthy food make us feel alive and is also vital to our health. We are committed to supporting New Roots and their mission – we invite you to invest in making sure that everyone has access to farm fresh and healthy food.
