Last week we received a surprise visit from the Oldham County Conservation District when they stopped by the farm to present Ben with the county-wide 2020 Master Conservationist Award. WOW! What an honor! Here is Ben receiving his award from Board Members of the Conservation District. Ben Abell is the Farmer, CEO, COO, Chief Sheep Wrangler, Master Gardener, Freezer Installer, Tractor Mechanic, Bookkeeper, and Horticulture Technician here at Rootbound Farm.
Ben started gardening with his parents as a young kid growing up in Frankfort and has always loved growing plants in the dirt. In college he studied agriculture and forestry and went on to work on farms in California and Kentucky. Ben’s a big dreamer and his vision for Rootbound Farm as an ecological system that positively impacts the air, water, and soil is always moving us forward and inspired. Ben’s one of the most consistently optimistic and kind people I know. Congrats on your Master Conservationist Award Farmer Ben!
Veggie-Forward Recipes
- Roasted Beets with Balsamic
- Swiss Chard Tahini Dip
- One Pot Sausage and Broccoli Pasta. We recommend the lamb Italian sausage in this recipe. For a lighter fare, try the chicken Italian sausage
- Snow Peas with Butter and Lemon
- Garlic Scapes and Mess O’ Greens (Arugula) Pesto . The beautiful thing about pesto is you can cram any greens into the blender/food processor and it always turns out well. Carrot tops, kale, arugula, etc.
- Broccoli and Egg Fried Rice (this is a great time of year for fried rice! The veggie possibilities are endless with bok choy, garlic scapes, onions, carrots, broccoli. Best sure to add our organic farm fresh eggs. I like a lot of eggs in my fried rice to bring up the protein for a hearty meal.)
