About Our Rootbound Team

History

Rootbound Farm was started by Ben Abell and Bree Pearsall (we’re family and we run the business together). It’s hard to pin down exactly when or how it all started; our love for farming is rooted in some of our best childhood memories – gardening, hands in the dirt, family dinners, and inter-generational stories.

One version of our origin-story goes back to 2006 when Ben dropped out of college (just for a semester) to join Live Power Community Farm as an apprentice. Being a seasonal apprentice on one of the first CSA farms in the country made a deep and lasting impact on Ben for the kind of community-driven farm he could be a part of back home in Kentucky. From there, the farming journey continued for another decade as Bree and Ben worked on other peoples’ farms, navigated other careers, and always farmed on the side. In 2015, Ben and Bree launched Rootbound Farm and our first season of Community Supported Agriculture with 75 founding members.

Rootbound Farm has grown swiftly and sustainably – thanks to the support from our CSA members, community, and dedicated staff. We’re staying true to our vision of being community-scaled and community-accountable. 100% of our farm products are sold locally in our community to a network of 1000+ CSA members, farmers market supporters, and small wholesale partners.

Everyday we set the intention to raise good food, feed families healthy nutritious food that enriches their lives, and leave the land better than when we started.
